Working hard for jobs

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met with Ann Jackson, South Yorkshire District Manager of Jobcentre Plus, to discuss how the current economic difficulties have affected local employment. Ann explained that Jobcentre Plus are working with local employers to identify their skills needs,  and then matching potential job applicants who have those skills or who can gain them with the jobs that need filling.

Meg said:

“These are difficult times and people are understandably worried about losing their jobs, and if it happens how long will it be before they get back into work. Ann reassured me that Job Centre Plus staff are working hard to help people who do lose their job find a new one quickly.”

The number registered as unemployed in Sheffield claiming Job Seekers Allowance in January 2009 was 12, 516 as opposed to 8,200 the previous year. The unemployment rate is 3.7%, up from 2.4% in Jan 2008; however, nearly half of people leave the unemployment register within 13 weeks of signing on.
