Reforming the United Nations

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Recently Meg chaired a meeting held in Westminster on the topic of reform of the United Nations. The speakers were Paddy Ashdown, (ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats and High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2002 to 2006), David Hannay, (British representative to the United Nations from 1990 to95 and now Chair of the United Nations Association Board) and Alan Johnson, (founder and editor of Democratiya, an online journal).

The event focused on how to promote human rights, democracy and social justice across the world. Last year a policy group on progressive internationalism suggested a ‘concert of democracies’ as one of its recommendations for the future. Advocates of the idea argue that a universalist organisation of democratic states would help incentivise and promote democracy across the world, and allow the UN Security Council to be bypassed when undemocratic states stand in the way of action to promote human rights and democracy. The speakers and people in the audience discussed this idea, its implications for the UN, and whether alternative ideas for reform of the UN carry any greater credibility.
