Meg leads Commons debate on Sleep Apnoea

Friday, May 8, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn is leading an adjournment debate on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea on Tuesday 12th May 2009. This is a condition which can affect anyone who holds a driving licence and has been the cause of numerous road accidents leading to serious injury and death.

Meg’s work about this condition began following the death of a constituent’s nephew, Toby Tweddell aged 25, who was killed 2 years ago on his way to work. His car was in a morning rush hour queue on the M62 when the queue was hit from behind by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), crushing Toby’s car. The driver of the HGV had fallen asleep at the wheel, and was later diagnosed as suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Less than two weeks before the accident the driver had visited his GP for a second time complaining of excessive tiredness, but the GP failed to spot the signs of sleep apnoea.

The Coroner, in his report into Toby’s death, made a number of recommendations which have been rebuffed by the Government. During the debate Meg will use expert research to challenge the Government’s statistics, and give a number of examples from abroad which contradict the official stance.
