Meg supports better services for cancer survivors

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn supports Macmillan Cancer’s latest campaign for better services for the UK’s cancer survivors. The cancer charity wants to raise awareness of the difficulties cancer patients face after their life-threatening disease. Many survivors experience emotional problems, with side effects such as severe fatigue or memory loss, or find it hard to get back to work, pay the bills or start a family.

Meg said:

“There are two million people living in the UK who have had cancer diagnosed and the number is rising by 3% every year.  They will live with the disease or the consequences of their treatment for the rest of their lives.”

“Health and social care services have to start doing more to support this growing population, and that’s why I’m backing Macmillan’s campaign to help these people get their lives back.”

Ciarán Devane, Macmillan’s Chief Executive, said:

Cancer survivors tell Macmillan they feel abandoned after treatment and need more support.  Cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence but it shouldn’t be a life sentence either.”

Macmillan provides help and support for anyone affected by cancer.  For more information contact Macmillan’s helpline on 0800 500 800 or go to www.macmi;llan.org.uk
