New funding for greener living

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn welcomes new government funding to encourage greener living. Eight projects from around England will share in 6 million of funding through the Government’s Greener Living Fund. The Greener Living Fund aims to help individuals and communities in England live in a more sustainable way, reduce their carbon footprint and reduce pressure on natural resources.

One of the successful project bidders was Co-operativesUK and Meg Munn MP, a former Co-operatives Congress President, said:

“This funding is important because we should be doing more to help create a more sustainable environment. I am particularly delighted that Co-operatives UK has been one of the successful bidders. The co-operative movement is well known for encouraging sustainable and greener lifestyles, and this extra funding will help them continue this work.”

Helen Seymour, Head of Projects and Development, Co-operatives UK said:

“The lifeblood of co-operatives is involvement with their members. Co-operativesUK, the national body for co-operatives, with its partners the Plunkett Foundation and the Confederation of Co-operative Housing, will work with eco-champions in each co-operative to provide advice, guidance and support.”

The fund has been made available to projects that have a clear understanding of their potential to change behaviour and will provide them with two year funding. Most of the projects selected look at a range of behaviours that are good for the environment, like home energy, waste and water, but some of the chosen projects are more specialised and will focus on seasonal food and sustainable fishing.
