Meg supports improvements for disabled children

Monday, July 6, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP recently attended an event in Parliament to confirm her support for improving the health services for children with disabilities. The event was organised by the Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) campaign to launch its new report, ‘Disabled Children and Health’, which highlights the failure of the NHS to meet the basic needs of disabled children, including those with palliative care needs.

Meg said:

‘I support the campaign to improve the range of health services for children with disabilities. These children often face problems accessing universal health services such as GPs and dentists. This report helps in raising awareness of the problems they face and I hope this helps to change policy in this area.’

Families with children with disabilities who need specialist health services such as equipment or wheelchairs sometimes face problems getting them. They tell of waiting years to receive a wheelchair that meets their child’s needs, with the child having out-grown the chair by the time it is delivered. Entitlement to specialist equipment is described as ‘a complete postcode lottery’.
