Outrage at lenient sentences

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn has spoken of her outrage at the lenient sentences given to arsonists whose actions killed three men in a revenge attack. Michelle Lambe was sentenced to 9 years after ordering two teenagers to set fire to the property on Albert Road in January.

Meg responded to the sentences:

"Three people died in horrific circumstances following the actions of Michelle Lambe and the young people she involved in this crime. It was a deliberate act which showed indifference to the consequences. I am appalled by the leniency of this sentence. I am writing to the Attorney General to ask her to consider referring this judgement to the Court of Appeal for review."

The teenagers visited the property dressed in black and armed with two plastic pop bottles filled with model engine fuel. They broke in and poured the fuel around the doorway, before setting it alight - creating a "volatile" fire which spread quickly.

53-year-old Kane McTell, along with Barry Nicholson, 67, and Trevor Richardson, 37, were trapped inside the burning building and died either at the scene or later in hospital from their injuries.
