Meg supports pet friendly Bill

Friday, July 10, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has given her support to the Care Homes Domestic Pets Bill, a ten-minute rule Bill to make provision for residents of care homes to keep domestic pets in certain circumstances. The Bill is proposed by Dr Nick Palmer MP and seeks to clarify the different regulations across care homes where elderly residents often have to give up ownership of their companion pet when leaving independent living.

Meg said of the Bill:

‘As a former social worker manager working with elderly people I am very aware of the emotional difficulties they often face elderly people when they decide that they need to move into a care home.

One of the homes in the area in which I worked allowed people to take their small pets. The cat that lived there was much loved, not only by its owner but by other residents. Being able to keep a much loved pet can make a real difference to how someone adapts to their new life. I fully support the aims of this bill.’

The ten-minute rule Bill was formally presented on Wednesday 8th July.
