Heeley MP calls for a Royal Commission into assisted suicide

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has written to Justice Secretary Jack Straw MP to ask him to establish a Royal Commission to examine the issues surrounding assisted suicide. Her call comes after a House of Lords ruling that the law on prosecuting individuals who assist a person to commit suicide should be clarified.

This judgment comes after months of public debate about assisted suicide, with increasing numbers of British people travelling to Switzerland to use the facilities of the Swiss charity Dignitas.

Meg said:

“There is a clear public call for legal clarity about assisted suicide, and the recent House of Lords ruling support this. I believe that a Royal Commission would be the most appropriate way of proceeding. A Commission will ensure that we have a proper, open and measured debate, and its findings would help Parliament draft legislation commanding public support.”
