Extreme disappointment in sentencing review

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has expressed extreme disappointment at the news that the Law Officers (Attorney General and Solicitor General) have turned down her request to refer the case of Michelle Lambe, Jordan Dearman and another teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to the Court of Appeal.

Meg said:

“I was appalled by the leniency of their sentences. Three people died in horrific circumstances following the actions of Michelle Lambe and the young people she involved in this vicious crime. It was a deliberate act showing complete indifference to the consequences.

I believed that a review in the Court of Appeal was warranted. I am extremely disappointed at this decision especially for the victim’s families.”

Michelle Lambe was sentenced to 9 years in July after ordering two teenagers to set fire to the property on Albert Road in January. Jordan Dearman, and another teenager who cannot be named for legal reasons, visited the property dressed in black and armed with two plastic pop bottles filled with model engine fuel. They broke in and poured the fuel around the doorway before setting it alight - creating a "volatile" fire which spread quickly.

53-year-old Kane McTell, along with Barry Nicholson, 67, and Trevor Richardson, 37, were trapped inside the building and died either at the scene or later in hospital from their injuries.
