Hope for positive future for Springs Academy

Monday, August 17, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met with Kathy August, acting Executive Director of Springs Academy. The school, under its previous name of Myrtle Springs, had a turbulent history but the new academy was seen as a way of improving the educational attainment of local children. However after an extremely positive start the school was recently put into special measures.

Meg wanted to find out about the school’s plans for management restructuring and their strategy to take the school out of special measures. Kathy explained to Meg that the school had experienced managerial problems. It was not, she said, to do with pupil behaviour or aspirations, both of which have seen complete turn around since the academy opened. Kathy is Executive Director of an academy in Manchester which has had dramatic improvement during the last 5 years

Meg said of her meeting:

“It was an extremely positive meeting. It was quite clear that in the past the management structure was not adequate for the school. United Learning Trust have recognised this and have brought in Kathy August to deal with this problem and help ensure a change in the schools fortunes.

I think that the school can now move forward positively. I have offered the school my help and support in their efforts.”
