Weston Park Cancer Appeal - Meg opens new shop

Thursday, December 12, 2002

A new gents hairdressers, dedicated to making money for the Weston Park Cancer Appeal, has been opened by Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley.

The shop, also called "The Weston" will be giving its profits to the hospital.

It is managed by Kay Woodhead, who is 26 and has been in hairdressing since leaving school. Kay is keen to support Weston Park Cancer Appeal as her Mother lost her life to cancer.

There are further plans to open an internet facility upstairs above the shop where young people can use computers for help with preparing CVs for job applications and to learn about aspects of personal development with an emphasis on health and education training.

The shop is part of a voluntary organisation called JC"s Community Spirit which was founded as a result of the sad loss of three young people from Sheffield who all lost their lives to cancer related illnesses.

Jean Housley, Chair of JC"s Community Spirit explains "The organisation was born in order that we could have a positive attitude towards these tragic losses and endeavour to raise awareness of health issues and empower young people in whatever way we can."

Cutting the ribbbon at the opening, Meg said "I was honoured to be asked to open this special shop. I hope the people of Woodseats will make full use of the hairdressers and later the computer facilities, and help this wonderful organisation to keep raising money for Weston Park Cancer Appeal. December is Children"s Cancer Awareness month so what more appropriate time could there be for the launch of this great venture."
