Reopening the Elm Tree Police Station

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn is delighted to hear that the abandoned Elm Tree police station on City Road at Manor Top is to be reopened. It will become the base for Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) in the New Year. Meg is looking forward to visiting the police station once it is up and running.

The property was set on fire a number of years ago and it fell into disrepair and attracted drug addicts. Ever since its closure, local people have campaigned for the site to be returned to its previous status as a police station.

 Meg said:

‘It is great news that the police station is to be reinstated and will be home to South Yorkshire Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams. These teams provide a fantastic public service; they make a real difference to the deprived areas of the city.

Neighbourhood policing forms an integral part of the fight against anti-social behaviour, as well as providing a recognisable and comforting presence to the local residents and businesses.’

Inspector Gary Booth said:

“This move means we can be based in the heart of the communities we serve, so we are more accessible and visible to local people. This will help the SNTs reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and work more closely with residents.  We hope this new move will show local people that we are there for them and that they matter to us.”
