Government considering Meg’s suggestion of a Royal Commission on assisted suicide

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Last month Heeley MP Meg Munn called for a Royal Commission to examine the issue of assisted suicide. This week she received confirmation from the Ministry of Justice that her suggestion is being given consideration. The communication from the Ministry acknowledges that any changes to the law in this area would need careful scrutiny.

Meg said:

“I’m pleased that my suggestion will be given consideration. Assisted suicide is an extremely emotive subject, and there are a wide range of issues that need to be considered. It’s important that any decisions about changes to the law are made following a proper, open and measured debate. A Royal Commission would be able to examine the issues calmly and reach findings helpful to Parliament.”

Her call for a Royal Commission followed a House of Lords ruling that the law on prosecuting individuals who assist a person to commit suicide should be clarified. New guidance from Kier Starmer QC, the Director of Public Prosecutions, has just been released. But as more Britons continue to choose to travel overseas to establishments such as the Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland to die, Meg feels a Royal Commission is needed for a thorough examination of the issue.
