In the shoes of a shop worker

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

As a member of Usdaw, Britain’s retail trade union, Meg has some understanding of the complex issues shop workers face daily. Usdaw’s ‘Freedom From Fear’ campaign is focussing on the difficult decisions that shop workers have to take when customers want to buy alcohol or tobacco and appear below the legal limit. The Usdaw Respect Week is from the 2nd to the 6th November.

Meg said:

“It’s hard to tell the age of a young person, and refusing to serve someone who is underage can often lead to abuse.

Shop workers face 80.00 fixed penalty notices if they serve someone who is underage, with repeated breaches incurring a court appearance or a fine of up to 1,000.

I hope that shoppers in Sheffield Heeley will be patient with shop workers, especially leading up to the busy Christmas period, and produce ID without arguing in situations where it is required.”

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, added:

“We are delighted that Meg is supporting our campaign on behalf of shop workers in Sheffield Heeley. We want to raise awareness of this issue amongst young people at schools and colleges, so that they know to carry proof of age when buying restricted goods.

We also want employers to understand the pressures that their staff face and to support them with simple reporting systems, prompt response when a threatened worker calls for help and banning persistent offenders from stores.”
