Getting affordable water bills for community groups at the heart of the community

Friday, October 23, 2009

Meg Munn, MP for Sheffield Heeley is supporting a change to the law to ensure that local community groups no longer face unaffordable water bills. The campaign to change the law has been led by the Scouts, churches and community amateur sports clubs. They have called for fair surface water drainage charges- the so called “rain tax”.  These local groups have faced ever increasing water bills following the switch to site area charging for surface water drainage by some utility companies. The concession will apply to scout groups, faith groups, village halls, amateur sports clubs and other community groups.

Meg said:

“I am delighted that the law will be changed so that local voluntary organisations will no longer have to face unaffordable increases in water bills. Water companies will have to set fair charges that will allow people running these important groups to concentrate on the work they do and not worry about water bills.”

Huw Irranca-Davis, the Minister for the Water Industry said:

“While all customers should contribute towards the cost of surface water drainage, increases in bills of several hundred percent or more are clearly unaffordable for community and voluntary groups, and we cannot be in a position where this would force them to close. I am confident that this will provide a national solution that will mean a fairer deal.””
