The problems of Pernicious Anaemia

Monday, November 2, 2009

Recently at an event organised by the Pernicious Anaemia Society Heeley MP Meg Munn met constituent Theresa Taylor, a sufferer of this condition. Meg was able to find out about many of the problems facing people who suffer from this debilitating illness.

People with pernicious anaemia have a condition where their body is unable to absorb enough vitamin B12 from the gastro-intestinal tract. This vitamin cannot be produced or stored by the body, so care has to be taken to ensure it becomes a regular part of each person’s diet.

Meg said

“Mrs Taylor and other members of the Pernicious Anaemia Society explained that they had waited years before receiving a proper diagnosis. They also find that it is not easy to receive appropriate treatment which helps them live a normal life.

I have written to Ann Keen MP, minister at the Department of Health, to ask what steps they are taking to improve awareness and diagnosis of this condition and what plans there are to look at treatment regimes.”

For people with pernicious anaemia, the immune system produces antibodies which attack the cells produced to help absorb the B12 vitamin. Therefore, even if the suffer is eating enough vitamin B12, it cannot be absorbed. The body needs B12 to make new cells, including red blood cells which carry oxygen.
