Supporting people with diabetes

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn is supporting a new report from Diabetes UK which calls for greater education and support for people with diabetes. The report, “Supporting Self Management for people with diabetes”, highlights the need for people with diabetes to have quality information, personalised care planning and management, as well as access to a healthcare professional to reduce the risks of any long term complications. At present, suffers spend only a few hours each year with a professional to help them manage their diabetes.

Meg Munn said:

“There are over 4,300 people with diabetes in Sheffield Heeley constituency and it is vital that they are given every possible assistance to help them manage their diabetes successfully. I support Diabetes UK in their aim to ensure all people with diabetes have all the support and information they need.”

Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said:

"People make decisions about their diabetes management every day and want to maintain an independent, healthy and active life. If they need support to achieve this, it should be widely available.  Self management does not mean that people are left to do everything on their own, but that health and social care professionals, peers and family members provide the support they need.”
