Keep safe and warm this winter

Friday, November 27, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has welcomed the publication of ‘Health difficulties caused by hot and cold weather’ containing information for older people. The guide, produced by the national charity Counsel and Care, provides advice on how to stay warm and safe this winter.

The guide gives help and advice to those at risk, as well as bringing to the attention of the general public the needs of more vulnerable people during the winter months. The charity advises that there is a risk for frail older people living alone, or on fixed incomes, from low temperatures or unexpected changes in weather.

‘Health difficulties caused by hot and cold weather’ covers a range of topics, such as the practical steps that can be taken preparing for the winter months, as well as details of government grants such as the Winter Fuel Payments and Warm Front Grants with information on how to apply for them.

Meg said:

“We must protect the older generation during the cold winter months; they are particularly vulnerable during any sudden cold snap. Every year, those over 75 face the greatest increase in deaths directly associated with the winter months. We should do more to prevent this.”

Stephen Burke, Chief Executive of Counsel and Care, said

“We want to make sure that all those older people who are currently struggling to meet high costs of fuel bills claim their Winter Fuel Payment and receive advice about how to access support with heating their homes effectively. More relevant than ever, Counsel and Care’s guide raises public awareness to ensure people take action now to remain safe and well during the winter months.”

The guide can be downloaded from: www.counselandcare.org.uk/helping-you or obtained by calling 020 7241 8522.
