Engineers aim for Low Carbon Infrastructure

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Meg Munn MP has welcomed the recently published report ‘State of the Nation: Low Carbon Infrastructure’ published by the Institution of Civil Engineers. The report makes recommendations to government, industry and energy professionals on how to produce infrastructure that is consistent with the aim of reducing carbon emissions.

Meg said:

“The country has to reduce carbon emissions by 80% on 1990 levels by 2050. We cannot achieve this without an infrastructure that delivers on low carbon issues.

A lot of thought has been put into this report, it contains recommendations on both short term and long term aims. I hope engineers demand clear plans that will encourage a decrease in carbon emissions.”

The report advises that with well designed infrastructure, there can be positive changes in the habits of people and businesses concerning carbon emissions.  In this new low carbon era, engineers must understand how to minimise carbon emissions, whilst still meeting the needs of people.

The report can be seen on the institute of Civil Engineers website: http://www.ice.org.uk/state_of_the_nation/index.asp
