Raising awareness of disability issues

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has given her support to the International Day for Disabled People, held on 3rd December every year. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues, as well as promoting independence, inclusion and choice for people with disabilities around the world.

Meg said:

“Almost one in ten people are living with a disability and many still face problems about full participation in society. They are often left on the edges of communities. Very few people with disabilities are gainfully employed, in most countries up to 80% who are of working age are unemployed.”

The United Nations aims to promote the well being of all people, and ensure a greater and more effective participation in social, political and economic activities for people with disabilities.

The International Day for Disabled People was started in 1982, when the UN General Assembly decided on the World Programme of Action for Disabled People. This set out commitments for the UN and its members to promote participation of people with disabilities in every day life.
