Backing the Bid

Monday, December 7, 2009

The letter below is the one Meg sent to support Sheffield’s bid to be a host city as part of England’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup. The decision will be announced in mid-December.

RE:  Support for Sheffield as a Host City and England’s Bid to Host the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup

I would like to express my full support for Sheffield being chosen as a host city for the World Cup. Being the home to the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, and with two famous English professional football clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, the city is an ideal location. The infrastructure in the city is already in place and planned improvements are in progress to support this prestigious international event.

Sheffield has a history of welcoming people from all corners of the world. Sheffield hosted several games in the 1966 World Cup and also hosted the World Student Games in 1991. Ponds Forge Swimming Pool hosts many international events throughout the year.  Overseas students at Sheffield’s two Universities exceeded 13,000 in the year 2007/8. The city is home to people from many cultures throughout the world. Sheffield is twinned with Bochum in Germany, Anshan in China, Donetsk in the Ukraine, Esteli in Nicaragua, Pittsburgh in the United States, Kawasaki in Japan and Kitwe in Zambia.

Sheffield is also home to the English Institute of Sport with specialties such as sports science and medicine. Sheffield with its two football stadia, its international outlook, its central location and its diverse communities is thus, an ideal City to host the World Cup in 2018/2022.

Yours sincerely
