Midland Main electrification ‘when, not if’

Thursday, December 17, 2009

In Prime Minister’s Question’s in the House of Commons, Meg called for support for the electrification of the Midland Main Line. She quoted the Secretary of State for Transport, who had confirmed that it is a matter of ‘when, not if’, this will happen.

Meg has been lobbying government for the inclusion of the Midland Main Line when the next batch of rail electrification projects is announced. She welcomed the 69 million recently committed toward upgrading the line, running between Sheffield and London, but believes only full electrification of the service will enable it to attract more people out of their car and onto the train.

Meg said:

“The city and region benefit from frequent, safe and fast rail services.

Reducing journey times between Sheffield and London to below two hours would be a boost which will have a positive impact for the region’s economy. Earlier in the year, at the Yorkshire and Humber Grand Committee, I emphasised to the Regional Minister the importance of improvements to the Trans-Pennine rail services.

Enhancements to the infrastructure of both rail lines, and improvements to the rail services available, are imperative. They would have a positive effect on the local economy, would reduce carbon emissions and take the pressures off our roads.”
