Pensioner honoured for war service

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn took great pleasure in presenting Cyril Carrier with his Normandy Bar commemorating his service during the Second World War. A resident of Intake, Cyril had contacted Meg earlier in the year to request assistance in receiving this commemorative medal.

Cyril was only a young man of seventeen when he joined the navy and served on such ships as the HMS Royal Oak, which was torpedoed by a U-boat in 1939 with over 800 lives lost.

Meg said:

“I am honoured to have been asked to present Cyril with his Normandy Bar on behalf on the Normandy Council. He was ecstatic to receive his medal; it was an emotional moment.

Cyril is a fantastic man, and doesn’t look a day over 50! I thoroughly enjoyed his entertaining stories about his life in the Navy.”

The award comes from the Normandy Council, which is awarding Normandy Bar medals inscribed ’1944-2009 Normandy, Terre de Liberte’ - to survivors of the military actions  which paved the way for the liberation of Europe.

The Normandy Council distributed the medals to veterans who returned to France for a ceremony at Arramanche to commemorate 65 years since the landings. However Mr Carrier was not able to make the journey and so arrangements were made for him to receive his medal at his home.
