Meeting the Bishop of Erbil

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Methodist MP Meg Munn on a recent visit to the Kurdistan region of Iraq met the Catholic Bishop of Erbil, at his central church in the city. During the meeting Meg asked the Bishop about his experience of being a Christian in Iraq. Bishop Rabban said he is very proud to be a Kurd and a Christian and goes about his business without any problems. He is very concerned that reports of attacks on Christians in Iraq are taken to mean that nowhere in Iraq is safe for them.

Meg said:

“There have been a number of reports of the ill treatment of Christians in Iraq, including debates in the British parliament. It is reassuring to know that in this part of Iraq Christians are welcome, have the freedom to worship and are valued in the same way as other members of the community.”

The Bishop explained that the numbers of Christians in the Kurdistan region have grown from around 25,000 in the early 1990s to 150,000 now. The Kurdistan Regional Government is very supportive of Christians, and the Bishop is able to travel around freely. The regional parliament has 5 reserved seats for Christians to ensure their representation. The Bishop presented Meg with a calendar for 2010 where each month had a picture of a village with a church where Christians live in the Kurdistan region
