‘Keep the heating on’

Monday, January 11, 2010

Meg Munn MP today advised vulnerable families in Sheffield Heeley to keep the heating on as they will be helped by the Government Cold Weather Payments scheme.

Meg said:

“As the cold snap continues, I don’t want vulnerable people to be frightened about keeping warm by the prospect of fuel bills. It’s especially important that the elderly know there is extra help for them.  The Winter Fuel payments and Cold Weather Payments are two ways in which people can get help to keep warm this winter.

There are over 180,000 people in Sheffield Heeley that are eligible for the Cold Weather Payments. These payments are automated so everyone who is entitled will get them and should not worry about keeping the heating on.”

So far this winter, the Government has made around 200 million worth of Cold Weather Payments; 70 million of this over the New Year’s weekend alone. Cold Weather Payments are for those on a low income and are made available for each seven-day period at or below zero degrees Celsius. As well as Cold Weather Payments, over 12.3 million older people will benefit from Winter Fuel Payments, totalling around 2.7billion.
