Meg commits to Holocaust Memorial Day

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn pledged her support to Holocaust Memorial Day and signed a Book of Commitment to honour those who perished in the Holocaust. She paid tribute to the remarkable individuals that survived and have since dedicated their lives to teaching younger generations about the dangers of intolerance.

Meg said:

“It is so important that Holocaust survivors pass on the lessons they have learnt and challenges they have overcome. They are truly extraordinary people and the Holocaust Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on their legacies.

We must remember those that lost their lives in the Holocaust and ensure that such terrible crimes of racism and victimisation and genocide are neither forgotten nor repeated.”

January 27th marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. In light of this, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to give MPs the opportunity to acknowledge those who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust - and to put forward a ‘Legacy of Hope’, to learn from the experiences of survivors and to create a future free from hatred and prejudice.

Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said:

“We are delighted that Meg is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day. Remembering and learning about the Holocaust is more important now than ever before. This year’s theme, ‘The Legacy of Hope’ highlights the important role young people have to play in taking the Survivors’ mantle forward and educating their peers about the Holocaust.”

This year is the ninth year that Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated in the UK.
