Creating the new college

Monday, February 15, 2010

Meg Munn MP recently visited Sheffield College to meet Chief Executive Heather Macdonald and her recently formed Executive Team to hear their plans for the future. Both the new city-centre campus and Norton college campus are situated in Heeley constituency.

The city-centre campus has been in a process of redevelopment since 2007, being transformed into a purpose-built vocational educational establishment. The new main building will provide new opportunities for developing courses for 16-19 year olds. During the meeting they discussed some of the exciting new developments, as well as their concerns about fewer city wide learning opportunities for older adults due to the tightening financial situation.

New technologies have been used in the creation of up to date classrooms and workshops, equipped with modern equipment to ensure the best level of teaching. The building will have solar panels and wind turbines on the main roof which will generate a proportion of the electricity the building will need.

Sparks restaurant, situated in the college, has an extremely high reputation across the city for exceptional food and service, all provided by the students under the care of their tutors. The restaurant gives an opportunity for students to gain experience in a commercial environment, as well as providing a place where people of Sheffield can taste exceptional food by some of the brightest talents the college has to offer.

Meg said:

“I was pleased to meet Heather Macdonald and her new management team at the college.

The new main building is a significant improvement for the education of the young people of Sheffield; it will also be an attractive an iconic building that the city can be proud of.

The catering and hospitality taught in Sparks is one of the most successful sections of the college and I enjoyed my time seeing the new facilities. The staff, service and food were second to none and I recommend that everyone visit when they can.”
