Supporting National Family Week

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Meg Munn visited the MENCAP centre in the constituency to show her support during National Family Week 2010. The week runs from the 31st May to the 6th June and is designed to highlight the importance of family quality time, and promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. It is supported by a whole range of charities, community groups, statutory bodies, schools, sporting associations and faith networks.

As part of their ‘Sharing Caring Project’ MENCAP work with family carers of adults with learning disabilities. By providing support, accessible information, group and individual support, the project aims to support families in their caring role and help them to plan for the future with greater confidence.

Meg said:

“Through its many programmes such as the Sharing Caring Project, Progression to Independence and the Gateway Club, Sheffield MENCAP supports over 700 families of children and adults with learning difficulties.

“They have a focus on educational and creative opportunities, leisure and social activities as well as projects to support family carers. I could think of no better organisation to visit during National Family Week.

It was a pleasure to meet the staff and young people. They were engaged in a range of activities - from making pizzas, arts and crafts, to potting in the greenhouse.”
