Meg pledges her support to CRY

Friday, June 11, 2010

Meg pledged her support to the charity CRY at its annual Parliamentary Reception this week. The organisation CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) was set up in 1995 to raise awareness of the conditions that can lead to sudden Cardiac Death in young people. CRY was first brought to Meg’s attention when a constituent contacted the office after he was diagnosed by his GP with the conditions that could lead to a sudden cardiac arrest.

At the meeting Meg discussed with Chairman, Hugh Mulcahey, the work the charity does in offering support and counselling to those that have suffered a loss. It also promotes heart screening and ECG testing programmes, donates medical equipment, and raises funds for the CRY Centre for Sports Cardiology at the Olympic Medical Institute.

Meg said:

“Undiagnosed heart conditions are a real threat to sporting people. It is a shocking statistic that 12 young people die each week to previously undetected heart conditions. It is a tragedy for each and every family that loses a loved one.

It is so very important to raise awareness of the conditions so lives can be saved. CRY is doing an invaluable job in raising the awareness of GPs and coroners to the condition, but also supporting those that have lost a family member.”
