Celebrating Co-operative Fortnight

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn visited Sheffield’s Co-operative Bank in the city centre as part of the UK’s first ‘Co-operative Fortnight’.  She met the branch manager, Paul Land, to hear what he thinks is important to promote during the fortnight, where he sees co-operatives going, and what challenges lie ahead.

The Co-operative Fortnight was designed to highlight the relevance of co-operatives in all forms of activity in the business, industry, community and social spheres. The idea was to showcase and promote the co-operative movement’s aims and achievements to the wider public. There are over 4,800 independent co-operatives in the UK and they work in all parts of the community.

Meg said:

“As a member of a Co-operative Society, a member of the Co-operative Party and a Co-operative MP I am well aware of the benefits of co-operatives.

Paul has some great plans for the Co-operative Bank in Sheffield. He is planning to promote co-operative ideas across the city, and increase involvement with local community groups. He feels that up until now the Bank has not promoted enough of its benefits to the public, and hopes that this will change in the near future.

Co-operation is good for people, communities and business and I hope that the fortnight will show this to the general public. This Co-operative Fortnight is a celebration of an alternative economy and an opportunity to work, buy, bank and invest co-operatively!”
