Shocking level of unpaid Child maintenance

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently obtained details of unpaid child maintenance which shows the nationwide child maintenance ‘Debt Mountain’ is 3,761 million, with the amount outstanding for Sheffield Heeley children being 5,230,000. The figures, obtained by the single parent charity ‘Gingerbread’, outline just how much non-resident parents have not paid toward the upbringing of their children.

Meg said:

“I was surprised to see just how much non-resident parents owe for their children. This money is vital - single parents rely on it for school uniforms, lunches and school trips. The Child Support Agency has to do a better job in ensuring this money is paid for the sake of the children.”

Commenting on the figures, Gingerbread’s Chief Executive Fiona Weir said:

“Ultimately the responsibility for paying child maintenance rests with the non-resident parent, but the Child Support Agency has to do its job too in collecting debts and enforcing payment.

We want to help single parents caring for children take action to ensure their arrears are paid. They can phone our free Single Parent Helpline on 0808 802 0925 and get a ‘Top Tips’ leaflet on how to pursue their child maintenance arrears.”
