Difficulties of the older generation

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Meg Munn, MP for Sheffield Heeley, recently attended a Parliamentary event organised by Age UK the new organisation combining Age Concern and Help the Aged. The event was an opportunity to discuss a new document produced by Age UK which analyses the new Government’s agenda as it relates to people in later life.

It was also a chance for Meg to speak to representatives from Age UK more specially about the difficulties faced by the older generation in the constituency of Sheffield Heeley.

Meg said:

“Age UK’s top priority for this autumn’s spending review is to safeguard spending on social care in later life. With the Government announcing 6.2billion of spending cuts during this financial year, with 25% being defined in the autumn spending review, I can understand why Age UK have concerns for the funding of social care.

In my constituency of Sheffield Heeley in the year 2005/06 we saw 40 excess winter deaths. With over 1,000 homes in Heeley containing people living in fuel poverty it is imperative that we make it clear to the Government that more needs to be done to support the elderly and the vulnerable.”
