Getting fair treatment for mental health suffers

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met a number of constituents, and representatives from Rethink, to discuss various personal issues faced by those with severe mental health problems in Sheffield. Rethink are a national mental health charity which works to help people who are affected by severe mental illness.

Rethink have launched a new campaign containing a number of recommendations to improve the lives of people affected by severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and personality disorder. Psychological therapies have been proved to be cost-effective and beneficial to recovery, however a recent survey found that less than two thirds of mental health service users have been offered the treatment.

Meg said:

“I was concerned to hear about the disappointing experiences my constituents have had with mental health provision in Sheffield. I will contact the Sheffield Care Trust in light of their experience.

It’s important that those affected by severe forms of mental illness are given a fair chance of recovery. I will write to the Minister concerned at the Department of Health about the provision for those affected by mental illness.
