Planning the next steps in tackling death on our roads

Monday, August 16, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met constituent Seb Schmoller to discuss the next steps in tackling the threat of death and serious injury on our roads cased by drivers with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Meg and Seb have been working over a number of years to highlight the dangers of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, a medical condition that causes drivers to fall asleep at the wheel of their vehicle. Seb first contacted Meg after a LGV driver who suffered from the condition crashed his lorry into a car containing his nephew Toby, tragically killing him.

Since then they have brought together a panel of medical experts to review what can be done to tackle the disease. Meg has also spoken about it in Parliament, and last year she was awarded ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ by the road safety charity BRAKE for her campaigning on this issue.

Meg said:

“It was a good and productive meeting with Seb. We discussed the next steps in our campaign to have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea recognised as the serious threat it is. I look forward to continuing working with Seb on this issue in the future.”
