Community pharmacies improving our health

Monday, August 23, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP, Meg Munn recently visited the Lloydspharmacy branch at Jordanthorpe Health Centre to learn how community pharmacy can help to improve the health of local residents. The visit was arranged to demonstrate first hand the pivotal role community pharmacists can play as an integral part of primary healthcare teams.

During her visit, Meg was given a diabetes test by cluster lead pharmacist, Luke Downs. Lloydspharmacy was the first pharmacy chain to introduce free diabetes and blood pressure checks.

Meg said off her visit:

"It was a good opportunity to discuss the various initiatives Lloydspharmacy are currently running. I was impressed with the Type 2 diabetes screening service available. The ease and convenience of going to a local pharmacy for a simple finger-prick test, consultation and results in a matter of minutes.

Pharmacists can play a very prominent role in promoting the health of the nation. I hope my constituents will visit and take advantage of the free health checks available in their local pharmacy.”

James Lindsay, AAH Pharmaceutical’s head of corporate relations said:

“Community pharmacists are increasingly becoming partners in the delivery of healthcare, helping to improve not only the health and wellbeing of whole communities through public health initiatives, but of individuals who can come to their pharmacy for expert advice and care.”
