Tackling mental health illness

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently spent an afternoon with the Primary Care Trust learning more about local provision for those suffering from mental illness. She met the Service Director of the Acute and Community Services, Richard Bulmer, at the Michael Carlisle Centre. Richard had arranged for a tour of the acute psychiatric in-patients wards and provided an opportunity for Meg to speak to staff about their work.

Meg and Richard then went to the East Glade Centre to meet the ‘continuing need’ and ‘sector’ teams, usually based in local communities. Meg discussed with the teams the processes by which people will come into contact with them and the ongoing difficulties in the mental health sector. The staff wanted to share the successes they have seen personally working in this area.

Meg said:

“It was interesting to see the acute psychiatric in-patients wards and talk to staff about their experiences. They work hard providing meaningful day time activity, and the occupational therapy, such as cooking and pottery, looked like it was producing some great work.”

It was useful to see the two sides of the Primary Care Trust in Sheffield. The staff try their best to produce a well rounded, personal care scheme for those in the city suffering from mental health illnesses.”
