Meg supports clean, green heat for homes and business

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn was delighted that the government announced its commitment to the Renewable Heat Incentive with 860 million of funding in anticipation of a 10-fold growth rate in the sector. She had been encouraging them to invest in this important step toward carbon-free energy production and had joined green campaigners and their solar-powered hot air balloon outside Parliament to show her support for clean, green heat for homes and businesses.

Having a Renewable Heat Incentive is vital in encouraging people to switch to planet-friendly heating. The previous Labour Government had pledged to introduce this incentive in April 2011, but reports had suggested it could be delayed by the Comprehensive Spending Review. Any delay would have damaged the UK’s infant renewable heat industry as a lack of strong support from the new Government would make potential investors nervous.

Meg Munn MP said:

“Heating our homes equals almost half of the CO2 emissions in the UK and it is vital that we do all we can to reduce this. Encouraging ‘green’ heating systems is essential if we are to cut climate-changing carbon emissions.

I’m backing a Renewable Heat Incentive that will create jobs and help people save money on fuel bills.”

Paul Monaghan, Head of Social Goals and Sustainability at The Co-operative Group said:

“As a business that is working hard to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, we require clarity and consistency of support.”

Friends of the Earth’s Renewable Energy Advisor Alan Simpson said:

“It’s great that MPs like Meg Munn are supporting the switch to planet-friendly ways of heating our homes and workplaces.”
