Dangers of drinking

Monday, November 1, 2010

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently joined the Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Action Team on their mission to educate young people about the dangers of underage drinking as part of Alcohol Awareness Week 2010.

The team met at Meadowhead and were joined by local partners from the police department and children services. The event was organised by Tracey Ford, Carer and Communities Development Manager in the Sheffield Drug & Alcohol Action team, and focused on speaking to young people and their carers as they passed to discover more about drinking habits and offer advice where it was needed.

Meg commented:

“The statistics are stark: half of all 11-15 year olds have had a drink and more than a third of them regularly drink with the intention of getting drunk.

Events such as today’s are valuable so we can both learn more about why young people drink, and help educate them on why excessive use of alcohol can effect lives in a negative way.

The Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Team are doing a fantastic job working alongside the police and other services to try and get this message across. I was pleased I could be involved.”
