Getting help to Quit Smoking

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently visited the newly opened Quit Smoking Shop, located at 39 Charles Street in the City Centre. She met the staff and heard that they offer a walk-in service to provide smokers with the opportunity to get NHS support without the need for an appointment to stop smoking.

They offer nicotine replacements to help tackle the smoking addiction and focus on each individual, designing a plan to help them whilst recognising that it is very rare for people to quit without a relapse. The staff are friendly, well trained and completely confidential.

Whilst at the shop Meg met Adrian, one of the clients, who told her about his experience trying to quit.  He had tried numerous times before but had many relapses; however he said with the help from this centre he has really found the will to abstain from smoking.

The shop is open six days a week, including Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. As they only moved into the building a short while ago decoration was still underway. They plan to have the centre in bright colours that have been proven to help people quit smoking.

Meg said:

“This is a fantastic service for any smokers wanting to give up.  If your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking, you can get help to quit with this dedicated team.

Smoking is a serious issue and is one of Sheffield largest health risks. It’s estimated that there are 111,000 smokers in the city so it is great to see a team of highly dedicated professionals working to tackle this serious health issue.”

Claire Holden, Sheffield Stop Smoking Service Manager, said:

“Stop smoking drop in services like the Quit-Stop are proven to be effective in supporting individuals to quit for good with evidence showing that you are four times more likely to be successful with the help of a trained adviser than going it alone.”
