Changing Legal Aid

Monday, January 24, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently met John McSweeney and Graham Hogarth of Howells Solicitors to discuss the changes being made to the Legal Aid scheme. These changes are being introduced over the coming year and will have a profound effect on people wishing to use the legal system, particularly those on low incomes.

They discussed the scale of the changes that are being imposed by the government and the likely results for Heeley constituents and the solicitors themselves. Government plans include reducing the amount of legal aid people can apply for in certain areas; such as welfare and divorce. This may well result in a large number of people being left without help to resolve important problems.

Meg said:

“This is a very worrying situation as many constituents will not be able to receive legal aid for vital areas such as debt which could result in the loss of their homes.  This will drastically hurt those people who are lower to middle income earners, who cannot afford to pay for their own legal advice.’
