Youth Disability and Leisure

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

A session of the South Yorkshire VoiceAbility Youth Parliament was held recently in order to explore how the region’s leisure facilities fared in providing for young people with disabilities. The event offered the opportunity for elected young people with learning disabilities to discuss facilities in their local area and together get a sense of how well the whole area is.

The event was hosted by Adam Butcher, Sheffield’s MYP for Leisure, and involved many of the elected young people presenting information they had found on how disabled friendly leisure centres in South Yorkshire are.  Meg Munn MP attended and after the general discussion she joined a smaller group with two members of the Youth Parliament.

Meg was pleased to hear that many facilities in Sheffield are very disabled friendly, but that there are still others that are not. One important area is funding, many people are on income support and have not got the money to participate in certain leisure activities as they are too expensive. One solution would be for leisure centres to make allowance for people who are living with a disability so that they can experience exactly the same opportunities as people who are not.
