Getting young people involved

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently met Tim Vine, a representative from the football Premier League’s Kickz Project, to discuss future plans for Heeley constituency. The project, which started in 2006, uses the appeal of professional English football clubs to get youth involved in extracurricular activities.

The Kickz project aims to provide outlets for young people to get involved in a variety of sports, music, arts, and social/personal development workshops. The youth are given the ability to take ownership of their projects, and given the support to reach their potential. From an early age Kickz provides kids from all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds the chance to be involved and grow.

Young people need proper access to activities and support; otherwise they are at risk of becoming involved in criminality either as perpetrators or victims. Youth crime and anti-social behaviour in society can scar those involved.

Meg said:

“I’m glad to see an effective program which breaks down barriers between young people and the police, giving a positive impact on crime and anti-social behaviour.

Kickz is so much more than a football and sports development program and provides access to a great number of activities. I hope to expand the program more for young women and into our local communities.”
