Moving Forward with Catch22

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently visited the Catch22 project to meet staff and some of those helped by what they do. Catch22 is a charity that works to rehabilitate offenders by providing them with the means to help get their lives back on track.  They provide counselling, support, group work and many other services for around 500 people each year.

Whilst there, Meg was given a tour of the building by Julie Otter, Senior Service Manager. In one room she found a small group of people working on a design for their allotment, an ongoing project aimed to provide skill based learning for Catch22’s members. Many offenders have little or no education, so they work with them to help them gain qualifications in IT, English and Maths.

Catch22 work with people from different age ranges, however most of the people that come to them are between 18 and 25.   The percentage of people that reoffend after attending Catch22 is 29%, significantly lower than the national figure of 80%. As many offenders re-offend within a short space of time after being released from prison, Catch22 understand the importance of starting the rehabilitation process immediately upon release.

Meg said:

“It’s important to support rehabilitation projects as they help people to re-enter society with skills and qualifications. The work Catch22 is doing changes many people lives and contributes to society.”
