Encouraging the playing of tennis

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently attended a briefing given by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to outline their plans to expand involvement in the sport. The LTA explained that a number of programs have been created to develop tennis to those schools and neighbourhoods who currently have little access to the game.

In order to increase regular participation the LTA, who are the governing body for tennis in Britain, invests in facilities, supports existing clubs, and works closely with schools and local parks. They provide packs containing equipment and personal training information for physical education teachers in schools across the country. Getting children introduced to the sport is vital for developing talent and increasing the participation of people playing for fun.

As the LTA continues to grow they will expand their programs in the UK and internationally. Future plans will include encouraging more people from ethnic minorities to get involved in the sport, as well as creating international partnerships with underdeveloped countries. The LTA is also planning on hosting family media events to expand their messages to the public audience.

Meg said:

“As an avid tennis player I understand the importance of encouraging tennis playing early in childhood. The LTA does great work with schools, making it easy for physical education programs to incorporate tennis into their curriculum.

It’s important to dispel the myth that tennis is expensive and only for the economically privileged. Tennis is an affordable sport and should be more widely played.”
