Supporting Yorkshire Heart Centre

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Heeley MP Meg Munn is supporting the campaign to retain the vital life-saving children’s heart surgery services in the Yorkshire region. She has written to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley calling on him to keep the Children’s Heart Surgery Unit, based in the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, and invest in its future.

The NHS’s ‘Safe and Sustainable’ review of the 11 children’s heart surgery units in England recommended a reduction in the number of units to create fewer, larger centres. It has put forward four options for a four-month public consultation period, with the Leeds unit featuring in only one option.

The campaign to ensure that the Leeds unit remains open is led by the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, the charity that supports the unit on behalf of families.  Meg is backing this and will be making sure her constituents are represented in Parliament.

Meg said:

“I am concerned that if this unit closes my constituents will lose the chance of getting to a heart unit in time and lives will be lost. The nearest option if the Leeds unit closes is Newcastle, not a practical possibility for families based in south Sheffield.

We do need to ensure the health surgery units are of a high standard and provide the best treatment for the patients. However I believe the Yorkshire Heart Centre should be one of these locations.

The unit serves more than 5.5 million people across the region, which is one of the highest catchment areas of any children’s heart surgery unit. All its services are on one site and it has an excellent record for safe, high quality surgery.”
