Marking World Kidney Day

Monday, March 21, 2011

Heeley MP Meg Munn MP recently attended an event in Parliament marking World Kidney Day. The event was organised by the Kidney Alliance and sponsored by the All Party Parliamentary Kidney Group.

She received a briefing from Dr Donal O’Donoghue, National Clinical Director for Kidney Care, on the latest developments in kidney care, including a set of new Quality Standards produced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). These standards are derived from the best available evidence and act as markers of high-quality, cost-effective kidney care.

Meg also met patient representatives, including Ciaran Hill (aged 14) and Adam Phillips (aged 17), who are two of the youngest patients in Europe to receive home haemodialysis.

The theme of World Kidney Day is the link between kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease accounts for about 30% of all deaths worldwide, and 10% of all healthy lives lost to disease are accounted for by it alone. Chronic kidney disease itself is common, it is often silent and it is associated with the risk of premature death.

The Kidney Alliance called for improved management of chronic kidney disease to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
