Quality and Tradition - all in a day’s work at Ernest Wright and Son

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently visited Ernest Wright and Son. Established in 1902 this family run company hand-make high quality, life-time guarantee, scissors and shears using the traditional skills passed down from generation to generation. It was doubly interesting for Meg as her father had visited when he was Lord Mayor in 1977, and she was delighted to see some photos of him taking a very similar tour all those years ago.

Nick Wright, Director at Ernest Wright, welcomed Meg and took her around the premises where she was introduced to the three ‘young men’ on the shop floor who have all been working there for over 50 years. A major concern is that these fully-skilled workers are approaching retirement age and should they leave, the company would lose the skill-set required to produce the high quality hand-made products. The company are embarking on a work experience programme with Sheffield schools, considering apprenticeships and possibly training students from Sheffield’s Freeman College who specialise in the education of young people with learning disabilities.

Nick explained to Meg that he is currently in the process of regenerating the company through increased investment and marketing. As the last remaining traditional scissors manufacturers in central Sheffield it is important that the company continue their fantastic work. Meg was honoured to receive a present from Ernest Wright and Son of a pair of presentation scissors.

Meg said:

“I was promised grinding wheels, furnaces, sparks and flames during this visit and I was not disappointed! It really was fantastic to see a genuine traditional Sheffield manufacturing business in operation, with processes that have barely changed for over 100 years.

The high level of skill that goes into making each pair of scissors is impressive. I was amazed to hear that Ernest Wright and Son still produce over 150 different varieties. With orders coming in from across the globe for their quality product it’s very pleasing that people continue to recognise this quality produce made in our city.”
