Concerns about access to affordable medicine

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met constituent Catriona Currie who had travelled to Westminster from her university as part of a lobby of Parliament by the ‘Student Stop AIDS’ campaign. Catriona explained that she is very concerned about the implications of the proposed European Union - India Free Trade Agreement for generic medicines. She is worried about access to affordable medicine for millions of Indian citizens who are HIV positive or who have Aids.

Meg agreed to write to Vince Cable, Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Innovation and Science, to ask what the government is doing to ensure that HIV and Aids sufferers are not deprived of access to treatment as a result of this agreement.

The ‘Student Stop AIDS’ campaign is made up of students at universities and colleges across the country who believe that the world’s response to the HIV pandemic is insufficient and unacceptable. They aim to bring an end to the injustice of HIV/AIDS by ensuring those governments, business and the rest of the developed world live up to their promises to deliver universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

Meg commented:

“It is important that those who have HIV or Aids are not left in a worse position as a result of international agreements to regularise trade.”
