Meg supports Neighbourhood policing

Friday, March 11, 2005

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently spent an evening/early morning on the beat with Special Constables in her constituency. Following this Meg asked the Prime Minster on Wednesday about plans for bringing together all aspects of community policing. In response the Prime Minister said that every community in the country will have its own dedicated neighbourhood policing team by 2008.

Meg welcomed the announcement saying;

“Neighbourhood policing teams will have the same officers working in the area week after week. This builds a relationship between the police and local people. The police will be more effective in beating crime - they will know local people better, know the problems that exist and how best to tackle them.”

Describing her night with the specials Meg said;

“Groups of young people can worry local residents, particularly if they are drinking or smoking cannabis. The problem is that young people feel they have nowhere to go, not being old enough to go into pubs.”

She continued;

“I was impressed with the professionalism of the Specials. They were able to deal with concerns of local residents and provide a visible police presence on the streets. But they also acted as any other police officer would, attending to an incident where someone had been assaulted and a taxi damaged. I pay tribute to all the Special Constables who provide this service on a voluntary basis to the community."
